New APTA Publication Available

"Today's Physical Therapist: A Comprehensive Review of a 21st Century Health Care Profession" has been posted on the Component Leaders Community in the Announcements section. [Please remember to log in to the APTA Web site using your member id and password before accessing Communities.] The purpose and intent behind this compendium are to provide an effective tool to educate policymakers, payers, prospective students, and the public about the physical therapy profession. The publication, which pulls together various subject matters and issues about the physical therapy profession, will also assist in the battles that many of you face at the state level when other professions attempt to inaccurately or inappropriately de fine our profession through legislative and regulatory efforts. As part of our "Go Green" initiative, APTA will push use of this document via electronic avenues. The document is also posted on the Move Forward website (under "For Health Care Professionals").

NPTA Congratulates Andrea Avruskin, PR Chair for the chapter

Twenty members of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) have been recognized for its "Emerging Leader" award. The award identifies and honors one physical therapist (PT) or physical therapist assistant (PTA) from each component who has demonstrated extraordinary service early in his or her physical therapy career.

Each recipient must be a current member of APTA for at least 5 years and not more than 10 years from formal graduation. Current or prior service on one or more appointed or elected groups at the component or national level is required. Nominations were submitted by component presidents or awards committee chairs.

Andrea Avruskin, PT, DPT, LAT, ATC [NV], is backstage physical therapist for Disney's Lion King at Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas. Dr. Avruskin also has provided services to the "So You Think You Can Dance Tour" performers and crew, the AVP Crocs Tour Best of the Beach in Las Vegas, and Las Vegas' Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts Gym. She has treated patients as diverse as the casts of "Le Reve" and Cirque du Soleil, hospital outpatients, and home-based rural residents. She is chair of the NPTA Public Relations Committee, and for the Las Vegas Chapter she has been involved with media relations, crisis communications, member recruitment, and national branding efforts. Last year, she was host/moderator of "Reforming Health Care: A Community Discussion on Behalf of the Obama-Biden Transition Team". Dr. Avruskin also volunteers as a news reader/programmer on Nevada's National Public Radio affiliate, KNPR, presenting news, seasonal, and special subject segments for a frequency dedicated to listeners who are vision-impaired.
